KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program returns home this weekend for a pair of Lone Star Conference matches at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
TAMUK faces UAFS on Friday, April 16, at 11 a.m. CT before playing host to Cameron on Saturday, April 17, at 12 p.m. CT.
The Javelinas had three league matches last week, all on the road, and dropped the first matchup to No. 17 Midwestern State before they picked up their first two LSC wins over DBU and UT Permian Basin.
The 17th-ranked Mustangs came away with a 7-0 win over the Blue and Gold, with freshman Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) as the lone Javelina staving off a straight-set loss in singles play as she fell in the third set to Casie Curry in the third flight.
TAMUK rebounded in the match against DBU despite the Patriots taking a 1-0 lead after doubles play. Maier kicked off a four-point rally in singles play as she bounced Adriana Carpenter in consecutive sets. She was followed by wins from freshmen Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany), Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) that lead to the 4-3 final.
The matchup against the Falcons turned into a clean sweep by the Javelinas as sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) started the run with a 6-4 win over Maria and Mariah Briones in the top doubles flight, while four of the six singles matchups were won by TAMUK in consecutive sets.
Montalvo and ter Morsche have each recorded six wins in singles play during the dual season. Montalvo has gone 5-1 in the third flight with her other win coming in the second flight, while ter Morsche is 6-5 in the fifth spot.
Doubles play features Montalvo and Donkor owning a 5-6 mark all at the top flight.
UAFS is 4-6 on the year and is still searching for its first LSC win. The Lions have lost four straight matches to LSC opponents, including three consecutive 7-0 decisions against their favor to Midwestern State, UT Tyler and St. Mary's.
Petra Csizmadia has been the bright spot in the singles lineup as she owns a 7-3 record in the dual season, including a 7-1 mark at the fifth spot in the lineup and the only Lion to record a win in league play. The doubles portion has seen Milena Achlamov and Bianca Koen posting a 7-3 record at the second tandem.
Cameron, meanwhile, is 7-7 overall and 1-4 in LSC matches with a loss in its last five matches, four of which have come against league opponents.
Alex Lopez has put in most of the work with an 11-3 overall record in singles play, turning in a 6-1 record in the third flight and a 5-1 record in the fourth flight. Lea Manga and Julianna Garcia are the other two Aggies to post at least eight wins, with the former going 9-5 in the dual season as the latter is 8-6.
CU has turned in a handful of different doubles configurations with the lone center point coming from Alisa Savina who is 8-4 on the year in the top duo regardless of her pairing, though a 6-4 record with Manga punctuates the Cameron lineup.
