Javelinas visit Southwestern in rescheduled match

TAMUK takes on the Pirates on Thursday at 5 p.m.

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program finally makes a trek to Georgetown, Texas, this week to take on Southwestern to make up the match postponed from earlier in the season due to the freezing weather that affected most of the state.

The Javelinas faced No. 8 Central Oklahoma and Trinity over the weekend in San Antonio and came away with a split decision between the matches. UCO defeated TAMUK, 6-1, before the Blue and Gold rebounded against Trinity at 7-2.

Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) was the lone Javelina who took a point against her opponent in the matchup against the eighth-ranked Bronchos. She bested Isabella Dunlap in the third flight of singles play in three sets with the decisive set finishing at 13-11 in favor of Montalvo.

The matchup against the Tigers featured two points in doubles play, with Montalvo teaming up with sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) to best Mary and Zoe Kaffen in the top tandem at 8-2. The newcomer duo of Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) pulled off the other doubles point at 8-7 over Paulina Garcia and Elodie Richard in the third pairing by virtue of a 6-4 super tiebreaker win.

Montalvo completed her perfect run in singles play with another three-set win, this time over Catherine Cushing, with the final set going in favor of the Javelina at 10-4. Knaab was the other member to take her singles point in three sets, with the decision coming against Richard in the sixth flight.

On the year, Montalvo is 3-1 in singles play with all three victories coming in the third flight. Meanwhile, Donkor, ter Morsche and freshman Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) all have two victories in the young season.

In doubles play, Montalvo and Donkor both have two wins, while Knaab and ter Morsche have one.

Southwestern is sitting on a 5-3 record after winning three of its last four matches. The Pirates defeated Texas Lutheran, 9-0, before dropping a match to Tarleton, 7-2, but rebounded with a 9-0 win over Howard Payne and a 6-3 decision over Division I foe Prairie View A&M.

The matchup on Thursday, March 11, is set for 5 p.m. CT at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.
