KINGSVILLE, Texas – Finally returning to the court following a three-week intermission, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program hosts UTRGV on Saturday, February 27, for a pair of cross-division matches starting at 11 a.m. at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
TAMUK was slated to visit Southwestern on February 13 in Georgetown, Texas, before inclement weather reared its head and caused a cavalcade of cancellations across multiple sports before the return to action this week.
The Javelinas opened the regular season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on February 3 to open the season and fell 7-0 to the Islanders. Junior
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and sophomore
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) put up a fight in the first doubles flight but ultimately fell 64 to Mariya Shumeika and Camille Townsend.
Freshman
Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) took on Leopoldine Boisseau in the fifth singles matchup and was battling back in the second set before falling at 6-2, 6-3.
Fellow newcomer
Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) took on the top flight against Townsend but fell in consecutive sets at 6-3, 6-1, while Donkor squared up with Emma Honore in the third flight but dropped the decision at 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman
Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) was the Javelina who came the closest to taking a point against her Islander foe, but ended up on the back end of a 6-4, 6-4 final to Emma Aucagne.
UTRGV is currently searching for its first win after opening the spring dual season 0-6 with losses to Lamar, Tarleton, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and TAMUCC. Isabelle Bahr has been the lone bright spot for the Vaqueros as she owns a 3-3 record in the top singles flight through six matches, while Sandra Putz is the only other member to come away with a win at 1-2 in the sixth flight.
In doubles play, Bahr has teamed up with Valeria Montero in all six matches for a 1-5 record, while Putz and Katarina Sasaroga own a 1-3 mark between the second and third flights.
