PITTSBURG, Kan.-Â The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field began the indoor season on Friday, with sophomoreÂ
Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) leading a quartet of Javelinas into the 2021 Boo Rogers Invitational where her pentathlon performance at the Robert W. Plaster Center snapped a Javelina school record.

Shows amassed a point total of 3,001 across five events in the Sunflower State, improving the previous record by 58 points that she initially set at the 2021 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

"I'm very proud of her." said head coach
Ryan Dall, "She's worked hard on improving this fall and it's paying off. I know she still has room to improve though, so I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do."

Her day began in the 60m hurdles, where she clocked in at 9.99 and earned 714 points in the process. From there, the sophomore turned her attention to the high jump, where she cleared a bar of 1.51m (4-11.25), finishing 10th and adding 632 to her total. She then collected 443 points in the shotput for a toss of 8.68m (28-5.75) before leaping to 5.06m (19-2.75) in the long jump adding 576 to her score.

The 800m run represented the final event of the competition and Shows competed well, snagging 12
th in 2:34.62 and adding 636 to her total to claim 14
th overall and the new Javelina benchmark.

Through a day of completion in the men's heptathlon, several Blue and Gold athletes maintain top positions with redshirt seniorÂ
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) sitting third at 2,949, followed by classmateÂ
Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) in sixth at 2.735 and freshmanÂ
Nathan Melton (Lorena, Texas) in 10th at 2530.

The men's multi opened up with a thrilling 60m dash that saw Harper finish with a time of 7.06, placing second for 861 points, while Melton took fifth at 7.22 for 806 points and Wallace seventh for 796 points behind his time of 7.25.

The trio then took on the long jump, where the redshirt juniors finished back-to-back in third and fourth. Harper measured at 6.80m (22-3.75) and Wallace at 6.22m (20-5) earning 767 and 725 points, respectively. Melton, meanwhile, earned 576 points and finished 14th in the event for his distance of 5.95m (19-6.25).

The shot put saw all three snag spots in the top-five, with Melton claiming second, reaching 14.14m (47-3.50) for 737 points on his first attempt before Harper heaved the implement 13.75m (45-1.50), taking third and earning 713. Wallace took fifth in the event with a distance of 12.51m (41-0.50), suitable for 637 points.

The high jump featured Harper clearing the bar at 1.77m (5-9.75) for 602 points in 10th place, followed by Wallace in 12th with a height of 1.74m (5-8.5) for another 577 points to his total. Melton rounded out the trio with a height of 1.53m (5-0.25) for 411 points.

Pittsburg State's Trey Mooney leads the group with 3,267 points, while Nolan Churchman from Fort Hays State sits second at 3,041.

Saturday will see the final three events of the heptathlon as well as the Javelina debut of redshirt seniorÂ
Shammawi Wellington (Portmore, Jamaica) in the long jump and 60m, with juniorÂ
Shaun Gill joining him in the sprint. Over in the women's pole vault, juniorÂ
Kimberly Ortolon (Edna. Texas) looks to improve her school-record mark of 3.84m (12-7.25) while sophomore
Bianca Cardenas (Elsa, Texas) competes in her first vault at TAMUK.
