Javelinas finish fall schedule at second day of ASU Invitational

Montalvo and Donkor pitted against one another in second singles flight

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program brought the fall season to a close on Saturday during the second day of the Angelo State Invitational at the ASU Tennis Courts.

Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) took center stage in the second singles flight as the two faced each other in the final matchup of the morning.

"We have a lot of things to work on, which is good at this point in the year," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien. "Overall, there was a lot of good tennis played and I'm very proud and excited for the future."

Montalvo and Donkor both took down a Rambelle before they faced one another. Montalvo downed Zoe Gubbels in straight sets at 7-6 (4), 7-5, while Donkor mirrored her efforts with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Maria Delgadillo. Donkor claimed the first set in the matchup against her teammate at 6-1 but it was Montalvo who won out with a 6-2 decision in the second set and a 10-7 win in the final set.

Senior Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) both picked up a win in the fourth singles flight. Baerman won out over Western New Mexico's Kajsa Gedlitschka at 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 before falling to Cameron's Pilar Jaurena at 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, ter Morsche bested Anna Claire Gerletti from UT Tyler in straight sets at 6-2, 6-3, but could not repeat the feat against DBU's Ira Vogelmann as the Patriot took the finale at 6-3, 6-3.

Baerman and ter Morsche teamed up for the third doubles flight and fought tooth-and-nail against UT Permian Basin's Lisa Guitton and Sofia Rishmagui in the first matchup. The Falcon pair eventually won out, however, at 8-7 (5), but it did not slow the Javelina duo as the tandem defeated Julianna Garcia and Lia Woods from CU at 8-6 in the final doubles matchup.

The Javelinas will now turn their attention to the spring slate as they look to rebound from a shortened 2020 schedule following the COVID-19 pandemic. The full spring schedule will be announced at a future date.
