Donkor walks away with Finals Win in D Draw

Montalvo and Baerman conquer B Doubles bracket

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program wrapped up the second annual Javelina Quad on Saturday at the Javelina Tennis Courts, with sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) paving the way with a convincing win over Leslie Omeire from DBU to clinch the D Singles bracket.

Donkor earned her title in straight sets over Omeire with a final score of 6-3, 6-2. This was after she advanced to the final round with a three-set comeback win over another Patriot in the semifinals on Friday as she bested Devon Austin-Canning with a mark of 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and senior Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas), meanwhile, conquered the B Doubles bracket over the weekend. They first downed the St. Mary's duo of Alice Thane and Maria Garcia in the semifinal round, 8-4, and followed up with an 8-3 victory over Kylee Shannon and Camila Baeza from St. Edward's.

Baerman also took on the Rattlers' Grace Bell in the last round of the D singles draw, but fell in consecutive sets, 6-4 and 6-1.

Over in the A Singles draw, senior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) faced SEU's Kate Malazonia in the championship round, but lost to the Hilltopper in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0. Montalvo was seeded in the same bracket and ended up in the third place match against DBU's Taylor Leslie and downed the Patriot in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4.

The B Singles draw featured senior Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) taking on Adriana Carpenter from DBU as the new Lone Star Conference foe won out in straight sets over the Javelina, 6-3 and 6-2. Meanwhile, classmate Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) took on Carpenter's teammate, Genie Hernandez, in the last round and ended up dropping the match in consecutive sets, 6-3 and 6-1.

The C Singles bracket had both of TAMUK's newcomers among the ranks in Franka Sindicic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Daniela Koleva (Kocani, North Macedonia). Koleva made it to the third-place match against Abigail Csengery from StMU and defeated the Rattler in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.

Sindicic, meanwhile, went up against Karin Comegys from DBU and added another straight-set win with scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

The A Doubles draw saw Sindicic and Romanovskaia fall to the tandem of Malazonia and Zoe Duff from SEUin the second round, 8-1, and ultimately fell to another Hilltopper pair in Lara Schimd and Loli Perim in the third-place matchup, 8-4.

Ruiz and Donkor wrapped up the same draw with an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Ashley Penshorn and Marina Vigil from StMU in the consolation bracket, and dropped the final match to Csengery and Charli Delmonico in a hard-fought 9-7 final.
