Romanovskaia and Donkor advance to Singles Championships in Javelina Quad

Second annual Javelina Quad will resume on Saturday, September 21

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program wrapped up the first day of its second annual Javelina Quad on Friday at the Javelina Tennis Courts, with senior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) both advancing to the championships of their respective singles draw.

Romanovskaia started her run in the A Draw with a straight-set win over Fanni Novak from St. Edwards at 7-5, 6-2 and needed three sets to overcome DBU's Taylor Leslie by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) started in the same bracket with a three-set win over St. Mary's Ashley Penshorn at 6-4, 4-6, 10-4, but fell in straight sets to the Hilltoppers' Kate Malazonia in the semifinal round at 7-6, 6-2.

Montalvo squares off with Leslie on the second day of the quad, while Romanovskaia eyes vengeance for her teammate against Malazonia.

Donkor, meanwhile, moved past StMU's Grace Bell in the first round in the D Draw in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, and bested Devon Austin-Canning from DBU in three sets after battling back from a 6-4 loss in the first set with scores of 6-1 and 10-5 in the final two. Her finals opponent will be another from the Patriots' roster in Leslie Omeire.

The B Draw saw senior Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) advance past SEU's Kylee Shannon at 7-5, 6-3, but the Rattlers' Marina Vigil took the ensuing match at 6-0, 6-1, to send Rauer to the third-place matchup on day two.

Rauer's opponent will be her classmate, Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas), as Ruiz defeated Adriana Carpenter from DBU, 6-2, 6-1, but fell to St. Edward's Camila Baeza with a hard-fought match at 7-6, 7-5.

The newcomer duo of Franka Sindicic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Daniela Koleva (Kocani, North Macedonia) took on the C Draw of the quad with Koleva reaching the third-place match as she first defeated DBU's Ashton Wilfong at 6-3, 6-4, but fell to Loli Perim from SEU at 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Sindicic dropped her first matchup to Perim's teammate, Lara Schmid, at 6-2, 6-4, and fell to Ira Vogelmann from DBU in three sets at 0-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Koleva will face Abigail Csengery from StMU on the final day of the singles draw.

Over in the A Doubles bracket, Romanovskaia and Sindicic teamed up to defeat Wilfong and Carpenter at 8-2 and will see Malazonie and Zoe Duff on Saturday. Ruiz and Donkor ended up in the same bracket but fell in their first matchup to Perim and Schmid at 8-5 and will have a chance to rebound against Penshorn and Vigil on the second day.

Both of TAMUK's duos advanced in the B Doubles, with Montalvo getting help from senior Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) for an 8-5 win over Vogelmann and Genie Hernandez to meet Maria Garcia and Alice Thane from StMU on day two. Baerman was also in the D Draw of the singles bracket and fell to Karin Comegys from DBU in three sets at 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.

The other Blue and Gold in the B Doubles were Rauer and Koleva as the two downed Bell and Gabi Ioannou in their first matchup at 8-3 and will see Shannon and Baeza on Saturday.

The second day of the Javelina Quad will wrap up on Saturday, September 21, at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
