No. 23 Javelinas cruise past Falcons

TAMUK takes 7-0 win without dropping a set

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 23 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program closed out the home portion of the conference schedule with flair on Sunday at the Javelina Tennis Courts, as a perfect 7-0 win without the loss of a single set was the end result of the Lone Star Conference match against UT Permian Basin.

"It was good to see them bounce back after a tough, close loss yesterday," said head coach Autumn Williams. "I think it fueled the fire for them to win in a dominant way today."

The Javelinas (9-5, 3-1 LSC) cruised through the match as the Falcons (7-16, 0-6 LSC) failed to force a single matchup to go beyond the minimum requirement.

TAMUK breezed through the doubles portion of the match as the tandem of redshirt senior Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) and junior Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) started the rally with a 6-1 decision over Stephanie Prats and Maria Briones at the top spot.

Senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) and junior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) secured the point with a 6-2 win over Melissa Ariza and Jessica Madamba in the third pairing, extending their unbeaten streak to eight in the process.

Junior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) completed the doubles sweep for the Blue and Gold with a 6-2 win over Madison Hoetling and Amelie Saint-Dizier in the second flight to flip the match over to the singles portion.

Rauer finished first for the Javelinas in the following matchup as she bested Anastasia Obreque in straight sets without dropping a point at 6-0, 6-0.

Ruiz followed up with a 6-0, 6-3, straight-set win over Pauline Obreque to put TAMUK on the brink of its third conference win, while sophomore Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) brought it home for the hosts on the heels of a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Saint-Dizier.

Carvajal added a win by retirement in the top singles flight over Briones as the Javelina claimed the first set at 6-4 and was leading in the second at 4-1 before the matchup came to an end.

Romanovskaia added a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win over Julia Ramalho in the fourth set, while Philavong finished off UTPB with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ariza in the second pairing.
