No. 23 Javelinas downed by No. 21 Rambelles

TAMUK drops first LSC match of the season at 4-3

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – Looking for the second ranked win in as many weeks, the No. 23 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program fell just short of the mark as No. 23 Angelo State claimed the decision on Saturday at the Javelina Tennis Courts by a 4-3 final in Lone Star Conference action.

The Javelinas (8-5, 2-1 LSC) failed to capture the doubles points as the Rambelles (19-3, 5-0 LSC) split the singles matches to come away with the win.

Junior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) extended their unbeaten doubles streak to seven matches with a 6-3 win over Virginie Becht and Maria Delgadillo in the third pairing.

Philavong added a three-set win over Ena Ovcina in singles play as the two were matched in the second flight and the Javelina laid claim to the first set at 6-4.

Ovcina took the second set at 6-4 but it was the Grambling State transfer who stood victorious as she came away with a 10-8 win in the final set to secure the point.

Junior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) won by retirement against Becht in the fifth flight as TAMUK has yet to drop a matchup in the fifth spot on the year. Becht took set one at 6-2 before Ruiz owned a 5-2 lead in the second prior to the retirement.

Classmate Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany)  added the final point as she took a three-set decision over Lucie Maitrot in the sixth pairing. Maitrot grabbed set one at 6-2 before Rauer responded in set two at 6-1.

Rauer moved her season record to 12-1 following a 7-5 win over Maitrot to cement the score at 4-3. To see the complete results, click here.

TAMUK will close out the weekend with an LSC matchup against UT Permian Basin on Sunday, April 7.
