No. 31 Javelinas close out regular season against UTRGV

TAMUK will honor seniors in final home match of 2019

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 34 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program will officially bring the 2019 schedule to a close on Saturday, April 20, with a makeup match against UTRGV at the Javelina Tennis Courts.

The Javelinas are fresh off a hard-fought 4-3 win over St. Mary's (TX) where junior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) became the hero once again as she turned in a straight-set win over Isabelle Bergman at the fourth singles flight to secure the decision for the Blue and Gold.

Romanovskaia moved her dual season record to 8-6 following the win over Bergman and she currently pairs with senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) in doubles play for a team-best 12-4 record on the year.

Leading the way in singles play is the one-two punch of juniors Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) and Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) as Rauer is 15-2 on the year ahead of Ruiz's 12-3 mark. The two are a combined 15-1 at the fifth singles spot while Rauer carries a 7-2 mark in the sixth flight compared to Ruiz's 5-2 record in the fourth spot.

Ruiz, meanwhile, owns a 10-5 record in doubles while paired with newcomer Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas). The 46th-ranked duo of redshirt senior Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) and freshman Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) lead the top spot with a 6-7 record to round out the tandems.

Sophomore Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) is the other Javelina nearing the 10-win mark as she is 9-7 on the year in the singles lineup at the third spot.

UTRGV is currently 6-11 in the spring portion of the schedule after taking down Grand Canyon at 4-3 back on April 6. The Vaqueros have alternated wins and losses dating back to March 16 with a loss to Southern Miss and carry a 3-2 mark in WAC play.

Dominique Ibarra leads the way with a 12-2 mark in the dual season, all at the top spot of the rotation in singles play. The only other Vaquero with a winning record is Nethmi Waduge at 9-6 as UTRGV is 38-53 as a team in singles play.

Ibarra pairs with Marine Darzyan for a 10-4 record as the top combo to lead a respectable 25-18 mark as a team. Katarina Sasaroga and Sandra Putz are 8-7 on the year in the third flight while Michelle Walker and Doriz Aleksovska are 6-7 at the second pairing.

First serve for the matchup between TAMUK and UTRGV is set for 2 p.m. CT at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
