No. 34 Javelinas downed by No. 35 Mustangs

TAMUK suffers only second defeat in last nine matches

Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 34 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program missed out on its best finish in program history in the Lone Star Conference on Sunday after falling 5-2 to No. 35 MSU Texas to bring the conference schedule to a close.

The Javelinas (10-6, 4-2 LSC) suffered only their second loss in the last nine contests as the Mustangs (13-5, 3-1 LSC) took the doubles point and carried over the momentum into singles play for wins in four of the six matchups.

Freshman Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) and junior Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) were the lone holdouts for the Blue and Gold in the doubles portion of the match as they teamed up to take down Juliette Mary and Lea Cizeron at the third pairing behind a score of 6-4.

Rauer, unfortunately, could not maintain her pace in the matchup against Casie Curry in the sixth singles flight as the Mustang came away with a straight-set win at 6-4, 6-2, to start the scoring on the backend of competition.

The hosts ended up taking the match in the next two matchups with Greta Lazzarotto defeating senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) in the second flight at 6-1, 6-3, while Bianca Duff bested redshirt senior Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) at the top spot in three sets.

Duff claimed the first set at 6-2 before Carvajal battled back at a 7-6 final in the second and lost out on the third behind a hard-fought 7-5 final.

Juniors Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) ended up with the two points for TAMUK in the matchup as they came away with wins in their respective singles matches.

Romanovskaia took down Ashley Ramirez in the fourth flight as the Mustang took the first at 7-6 before the Javelina grabbed identical 6-4 scores in the second and third. Ruiz, meanwhile, needed three sets as well for the win over Mary in the fifth pairing as she took the first set, 6-3, before her opponent took the second at 7-6, but Ruiz held out for a 6-2 final in the third to remain perfect in conference play.
