KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team returns home this weekend for a pair of home matches, including the Lone Star Conference opener.
The Javelinas will first face Trinity on Saturday, March 23, with first serve at 11 a.m. CT at the Javelina Tennis Courts, pending the forecasted weather. While Western New Mexico will pay a visit to South Texas on Sunday, March 24, for the first conference match of the year.
TAMUK comes into the weekend as the 37th-ranked team according to the latest ITA rankings, with redshirt senior
Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) and freshman
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) ranked 20th nationally as a doubles tandem. The Blue and Gold are 6-4 on the year following three straight wins to end their spring break trip, including a 5-2 win over No. RV Charleston and a 4-3 win over Palm Beach Atlantic.
Junior
Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) leads the Javelinas with a 9-1 record on the year after going 5-0 on the trip. All nine of her wins have come in straight sets and she is currently 7-0 at the fifth singles flight.
Classmate
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) is not far off at 7-2 on the year, 5-2 in the fourth position, as she had a 19-match unbeaten streak snapped in the Javelinas' loss to No. 18 Southwest Baptist on March 11. Meanwhile, sophomore
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) rounds out the trio with a 6-3 mark on the year, 6-2 in the third spot.
On the doubles portion, Carvajal and Donkor at 2-5 on the season at the top position, while senior
Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) and junior
Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) own the best record at 7-2, including a perfect 4-0 at the third pairing.
Ruiz and newcomer
Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) round out the duos with a 7-3 mark between the second and third tandem.
Trinity is currently 5-4 on the year after going 1-2 in the last three matches. The Tigers had a four-match win streak snapped following a 4-3 loss to Incarnate Word and most recently fell 5-4 to Johns Hopkins.
As a team, TU is 35-19 in the singles portion as Ashley DeBauge, Hailey Feuer and Caroline Kutach each have six wins between them, while Mary Kaffen rounds out the group with a flawless 5-0 mark between the fifth and sixth singles spot.
The Tigers own a 12-15 mark in doubles play, however, with Kutach and Megan Flores owning the best record at 5-4.
Western New Mexico, meanwhile, has gone 1-6 in its last seven matches after starting the dual season with a 6-3 mark. The Mustangs recently lost to Cameron on March 20 with the lone win coming at 7-0 against the University of the Southwest on March 18.
First serve against Trinity is set for 11 a.m. CT at the Javelina Tennis Courts on Saturday, March 23, while first serve against Western New Mexico is set for 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 24.
