Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville used a potent singles lineup on Thursday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., and came away with a 5-2 win over No. RV Charleston (W.Va.) for a second straight victory.
"It was a great match," said head coach
Autumn Williams. "The girls were excited to play today, which gave us some confidence and momentum, and I'm glad we didn't slow down."
The Javelinas (5-4) took the doubles point before laying claim to four wins in the singles portion to hand the Golden Eagles (9-2) only their second loss of the year.
The duo of newcomer
Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) and junior
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) bested the tandem of Elise Edwards and Silvana Slusarciuc in the second pairing at 6-2, while junior
Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferpol, Crimea, Russia) and senior
Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) came away with a 6-1 win over Mathilde Simon and Regina Saucedo to seal the doubles point.
Romanovskaia and Ruiz both carried their momentum into singles play as both came away with a straight-set win over their respective foes. Romanovskaia took on Saucedo in the sixth matchup and grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win over the UC member, while Ruiz faced Slusarciuc in the fourth flight and added a 6-3, 6-2 final to her season total.
Sophomore
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and junior
Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) were the other two Javelinas to also take straight-set wins over their opponents. Montalvo was matched up against Katie Swann in the third flight and posted a 6-3, 6-3 win, while Rauer downed Simon at 6-1, 6-0 for the final team point.
