Javelinas drop 4-3 decision to Dallas Baptist

TAMUK splits singles portion, drops doubles point in loss

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program dropped the doubles point to Dallas Baptist on Wednesday in the Capitol City, and couldn't recoup the deficit in the singles portion of the match en route to a 4-3 loss.

"DBU played an outstanding match," said head coach Autumn Williams. "We learned some things about ourselves in this match and we will continue to make adjustments."

The Javelinas (3-1) had the momentum at the start with junior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) turned in a 6-2 win over Anastasija Djordjevic and Ira Vogelmann in the third pairing.

The Patriots (5-3) took the decision at the top flight with Kate Daugherty and Claire Nguyen securing the initial split at 6-2 over the 15th-ranked duo of redshirt senior Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) and newcomer Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) to set up the final doubles matchup as the winner-take-all.

DBU took the doubles point after Adriana Carpenter and Taylor Leslie downed the second tandem of junior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) at 6-4, putting the Blue and Gold in an early 1-0 disadvantage.

Ruiz and Carvajal, joined by junior Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany), put the Javelinas ahead at 3-1 to start the singles portion of the matchup. Rauer made quick work of Vogelmann in the fifth position at 6-0, 6-1, before Carvajal added a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nguyen at the top spot.

Ruiz ran her unbeaten streak to 17 matches with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Daugherty in the fourth position to put TAMUK in prime position for the team win, needing only one point in the final three matches.

Unfortunatly, the Patriots won out in the final singles matchups, with Leslie taking the straight-set win over Romanovskaia in the second flight at 6-2, 6-3, while Carpenter downed Philavong in the third position in three sets at 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The final point came down to the sixth spot between junior Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) and Devon Austin-Canning. Austin-Canning took the first set at 6-4 before Baerman took the second at 6-3.

Austin-Canning won out in the final set, however, with a 6-4 decision putting the match in DBU's possession and handing the Javelinas the first loss of the season.
