Javelinas to take on Dallas Baptist in Austin

TAMUK will take on future Lone Star Conference foe in neutral-site match

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Looking to carry the early-season momentum into yet another neutral-site matchup, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program will make the 3.5-hour trek north to the Capitol City to take on future Lone Star Conference foe Dallas Baptist in Austin, Texas.

The Javelinas most recently downed UT Tyler in Prairie View, Texas, over the weekend, only one set shy of a clean sweep in the matchup en route to the 7-0 shutout.

TAMUK dropped only two points in the doubles portion of the match, with the third tandem of newcomer Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) and junior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) taking a 6-2 win over Savannah Seely and Brooke Brewer, while the No. 15 ranked duo of redshirt senior Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) and freshman Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) turned in a 6-0 win over Anna Gerletti and Lauren Kuhn to secure the doubles point.

Junior Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas), in her matchup with Caitlyn Cox at the sixth singles flight, was the lone Javelina who needed an extra set to earn the team point. Baerman took the first set at 6-3 before Cox grabbed the second at 6-2, but it was the Antonian College Preparatory H.S. who won out in the final set at 10-7 to provide the cherry on top of the Sunday sweep.

Ruiz, meanwhile, extended her unbeaten streak in the dual season to 16 matches dating back to last year with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brewer in the fourth position, handing the team win to TAMUK with the fourth point of the match. The Ronald Reagan H.S. product ended the 2018 spring schedule on a 13-match winning streak and took away wins over her foes against Laredo CC and Harding.

Carvajal, at the top of the lineup, took her first singles win of the year at 6-4, 6-4 over Chloe Chawner in her first dual action of the spring season as she looks to climb the ranks as the 12th-ranked singles player in the South Central Region.

Senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiance, Laos), entering the weekend as the ninth-ranked singles matchup in the region, provided the third team point for the Javelinas on the weekend with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set win over Gerletti in the win over UTT for her first official win of the year.

DBU is currently sporting a 4-3 record on the year as the 10th-ranked team in the South Central Region. The Patriots recently won out against UT Permian Basin at 6-1 before dropping a 5-2 decision to Washburn at home.

The Javelinas' matchup against DBU in the 2018 schedule was washed away due to rain, making the matchup on Feb. 10, 2017, as the last time the two programs faced each other. Dallas Baptist made the trip to Kingsville that day and came away with a 7-2 decision over TAMUK.

First serve for the matchup on Wednesday in Austin is set for 11 a.m. CT.
