Box Score LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program will face a new challenge this year with the change in the scoring format as women's tennis matches in the NCAA Division-II will now follow the Division-I format of doubles counting for a single point, rather than three.
Regardless, the Javelinas (1-0) turned in a solid performance on Friday against Laredo CC with a dominant 7-0 showing over the Palominos (0-1) to begin their run of the 2019 spring schedule.
"It was a good start to the season," said head coach
Autumn Williams. "Everyone played really well. They took advantage of opportunities and played with a lot of confidence."
The doubles portion went by without a hiccup for the Blue and Gold as junior
Valeria Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) and newcomer
Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) bested the Laredo pair of Priscilla Morales and Evelyn Hernandez by a count of 6-0 at the third position.
The tandem of junior
Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and senior
Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) secure the doubles point for TAMUK as they took the 6-3 win over Kyra Akinnibi and Monika Cantu in the second position.
Freshman
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and sophomore
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) added the cherry on top of the doubles sundae with a 6-0 win over Kely Olivaria and Chantal Lozano at the top matchup.
Over in singles play, Philavong took home a win by default of Akinnibi to get the second team point for the Javelinas, while Donkor cleared out Destiny Garza in straight sets at 6-0. 6-1, for the third point.
