Cervantes Named Oscar Strahan Award Winner for Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year

11 men and nine women named to LSC All-Conference teams following outdoor championships

RICHARDSON, Texas (TAMUK/LSC) – Redshirt-junior Richard Cervantes took home a pair of event titles last week at the 2018 Lone Star Outdoor Championships in San Angelo, Texas, and was named the recipient of the Oscar Strahan Award for Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year for his efforts in addition to a First Team All-LSC nod.

The Mission, Texas, native took first in both the shot put and discus throw at the championships with a pair of NCAA Automatic Qualifying marks alongside a third-place finish in the hammer throw.

Cervantes hurled the shot 17.80 meters (58-4.75) to kick off a Javelina sweep in the event and added another after slinging the disc 56.62 meters (185-09). His toss of 53.14 meters (174-04) in the hammer put him in third behind senior Kenny Zamorano, who took first behind a provisional mark of 57.39 meters (188-03).

Zamorano joined Cervantes on the First Team All-LSC alongside senior Javier Lopez, who took first in the 110 meter hurdles with an AQ time of 13.69, and teamed up with junior Todd Nicholas, junior Charles Greaves and sophomore Johnathan Harper in the 4x100 meter relay to take first at 40.33.

Greaves also added points in the triple jump for the Javelinas, taking silver in the event with a distance of 15.58 meters (51-1.25).

Freshman Ayman Zahafi was the final Hog on the All-LSC first team as he took the gold medal in the 800 meter run behind a time of 1:50.22.

Over on the women's side, junior Racheal Somoye impressed in the hammer throw as she set a new meet record with a toss of 57.38 meters (188-03) to take first and earn a spot on the All-LSC first team. She is joined by the 4x100 meter relay team consisting of sophomores Keandria Taylor, Teandria Taylor and Deana Richardson, and freshman Taylor Roberson who took the title with a time of 45.70.

K. Taylor also took first in the 200 meter dash to add points to her total with a provo time of 24.05.

For the Second Team All-LSC on the men's side, sophomores Andrew Perez and Jorge Rios both earned their spots after joining Cervantes in the sweep of the shot put with throws of 16.28 meters (53-5.00) and 16.18 meters (53-1.00), while junior Robert Downs garnered his selection after finishing in second behind Zahafi in the 800m at 1:50.36, and sophomore Vitaly Zhgun took second in the javelin throw with an AQ mark of 68.90 meters (226-00) to round out the Hogs.

On the women's side, junior LaGae Brigance, senior Irene Almarcha-Conejero and sophomore Madeleine Maltais all earned a spot on the Second Team All-LSC after Brigance took second in the high jump with a provo mark of 1.72 meters (5-7.75), while Almarcha-Conejero added a second-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with her provo time of 13.92, and Maltais finished second in the javelin with a toss of 39.38 meters (129-02).

Senior Alyssa Canul was named to the All-LSC third team after finishing third in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.82 meters (176-07) to round out the Javelina selections for the women.

The Javelinas will have one final week of competition to tune up for the NCAA Division-II Outdoor Championships starting on May 24 in Charlotte, N.C.
