TAMUK records second win over ranked foe in Lone Star match

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 47 Texas A&M University-Kingsville women's tennis program closed the weekend in style with a hard-fought 5-4 win over No. 36 Angelo State on Sunday at the ASU Tennis Courts.

The Javelinas (11-10, 3-2 LSC) were locked in a 4-4 tie with the No. 4 singles bout between sophomore Julia Rauer (Sasbach, Germany) and Zoë Gubbels heading into the final set before Rauer sealed the weekend sweep for the Blue and Gold with a 6-3 final for the team win over the Rambelles (14-7, 3-3 LSC).

Angelo State took two of the doubles matches while sophomore Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) took No. 1 matchup against Maria Delgadillo and Ena Ovcina at 9-8 to put the team score at 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Rambelles took a win in the No. 1 and 3 singles bouts before the Javelinas rattled off four straight wins to clinch the decision.

Junior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) bested Delgadillo at the No. 2 spot in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, while sophomore Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) followed suit in the No. 5 matchup against Virginie Becht with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win.

Baerman was locked in a back-and-forth affair with Lucie Maitrot in the No. 6 flight, which was eventually won by the Javelina at 7-5, 7-5, before Rauer's heroics in the No. 4 bout gave the win to the visitors.

TAMUK will remain on the road next week for the final three regular season matches of the year as the Blue and Gold open the weekend with a match against Division-I foe UTEP on Friday, April 13, starting at 12 p.m. CT.
