ODESSA, Texas – The No. 47 Texas A&M University-Kingsville women's tennis program carried its momentum from the previous night into the road match against UT-Permian Basin on Saturday and took the second win of the weekend in the first Lone Star match.
The Javelinas (10-10, 2-2 LSC) were one bout short of a clean sweep in singles play as they downed the Falcons (7-12, 1-3 LSC) at 6-3.
The No. 2 doubles duo of junior
Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) and sophomore
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) secured the lone doubles point for the Blue and Gold as they turned in a solid 8-3 win over Andrea Villalobos and Eugenia Sanchez to start the match.
TAMUK tallied the first three individual wins in singles play as sophomore
Julia Rauer (Sasbach, Germany) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amelie Saint-Dizier at the No. 4 spot, while freshman
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) added a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maria Briones at the No. 3 bout before Philavong turned in a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Villalobos in the No. 2 duel.
UTPB claimed the top singles matchup to set the score at 4-3 with two matchups remaining, but the Javelinas rolled through the final two bouts as Ruiz added a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sanchez in the No. 5 duel to secure the team win, while sophomore
Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) provided the exclamation point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Julia Ramalho at the No. 6 spot.
The Javelinas will close the road trip with a match against No. 36 Angelo State on Sunday, April 8, with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at the ASU Tennis Courts.
