Javelinas Edged by Aggies, 5-4

TAMUK falls short in non-conference match against D-I foe

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Kingsville women's tennis program squared off against New Mexico State on Wednesday afternoon and fell short of the comeback as the visitors took the decision at 5-4.

The Javelinas (6-8) fought back from a 2-1 deficit following the doubles competition, but the Aggies (5-10) stopped the rally by splitting the singles matchups.

NMSU took the first two doubles matchups while Victoria Romanovskaia and Viviana Ortiz turned in an 8-3 win over Helena Colvee and Eli Arnaudova for the lone Javelina point heading into singles play.

Romanovskaia put up a fight in the No. 1 singles matchup to Rebecca Keijzerwaard, but the Aggie came away with a 6-3, 7-6 final to claim the team point.

Valerie Ruiz bested Arnaudova in the No. 5 singles matchup to move the Javelinas closer on the team scoreboard as Ruiz cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 straight-set win over Arnaudova.

Laura Montalvo added another straight-set win in her No. 3 singles matchup against Quinty Janssen but needed the extra effort in the second set to come away with a 6-4, 7-6 final.

The Aggies took the Nos. 2 and 4 singles matches in straight set to seal the team win, while Stephanie Baerman was locked in a marathon back-and-forth battle at the No. 6 matchup with Colvee.

Baerman claimed the first set at 7-5 but Colvee responded with a 6-4 win the second. The super-tiebreaker set went the distance as well before Baerman held on for the 12-10 final.

The Javelinas will head out on the road on Friday, March 23, to take on Tarleton State in a Lone Star matchup. TAMUK will remain on the road and head to Austin, Texas, for a pair of neutral site matches against Newman and North Central Texas on Sunday, March 25.
