SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Phonephathep Philavong and Valerie Ruiz each contributed to doubles victories and also went on to win their singles matches as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team battled their way to a narrow, 5-4, victory over No. 13 Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex.
This makes consecutive wins for the Javelinas to up their record to 2-3. Central Oklahoma now owns a mark of 0-1.
The afternoon started with Ruiz and Victoria Romanovskaia teaming up to drop Central Oklahoma's tandem of Kirtana Bhat and Laetitia Charbonnet, 8-2. Stephanie Baerman and Laura Montalvo were defeated in their match, but Philavong and Viviana Ortiz grabbed another doubles point for the Javelinas with an 8-4 victory, putting TAMUK into the singles bracket ahead, 2-1.

Needing to win all three of the remaining contests to take the match, the Javelinas did just that. Next, Philavong outfought Bhat for a close win in a match that went to a decisive third set, but the native of Laos triumphed, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. The point that won the match was secured by Ruiz. She took set No. 1 without much trouble, but had grind out the second set before earning the win, 6-2, 7-6.
The next match on TAMUK's schedule is a make up date with Prairie View A&M on Thursday at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
