CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville tennis team suffered their second straight defeat on Thursday night, falling to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 7-0, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The evening began with the doubles competition and the Islanders (2-1) took all three matches against the Javelinas (0-2). The tandems of Victoria Romanovskaia and Valerie Ruiz and Viviana Ortiz and Phonephathep Philavong each managed to take two games, but Ortiz and Philavong were defeated 8-2 by Maria Maldonado and Jelena Dzinic, while Romanovskaia and Ruiz's match was left unfinished. Stephanie Baerman and Laura Montalvo fell to Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miquel, 8-0.
In singles play, Julia Rauer cruised to an easy victory in the first set against Marina Trigona, but Trigona would come back to secure a 1-6, 6-1, 10-4 victory. Romanovskaia battled through two close sets against Luna Dormet, but fell 6-4, 6-4. Philavong's singles match pitted her against Dzinic and TAMCC's senior earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Ruiz took a 6-1, 6-1 loss against Miquel, Baerman was defeated by Maldonado, 6-2, 6-0 and Maria Soler Valverde picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ortiz.
The Javelinas have two matches on the docket for Saturday, first against Northeastern State at 10 a.m. and then versus Trinity at 2 p.m. A recap of the day for Javelina tennis will be posted on Javelinaathletics.com.
