KINGSVILLE, Texas (Football) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville defensive backs coach and Javelina Hall of Famer
James Jefferson is serving as a coaching intern for the Seattle Seahawks preseason training camp this summer.
Jefferson, who was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2006, returns to the NFL team he played for from 1989-93.
The Lone Star Conference defensive back of the year in 1985, he earned All-America honors after leading the Javelinas to an LSC crown.
Following his sensational collegiate career, Jefferson went on to sign with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. After five seasons with the Seahawks, he played for British Columbia of the CFL in 1994-95 before concluding his pro career at Winnipeg in 1995. An All-CFL honoree for the Blue Bombers, Jefferson was a key member of the clubs that went on to win the Grey Cup.
While in Seattle, he set a Seahawk record with a 97-yard kickoff return. After finishing is pro career, he coached for the Javelinas for a season before going to Alabama State in 1997.
He returned to TAMUK for a year before becoming a scout for the New Orleans Saints in 2000-07.
Jefferson coached at his alma mater in 2007 before becoming defensive coordinator at Kingsville Academy High School for three seasons and then spending two years at Corpus Christi Ray High School.
He is currently entering his third season as the defensive backs coach for the Javelinas. Last season,
Trevor Pesek led the team in tackles and earned Capital One Academic All-America® First Team honors and
Kelechi Amushie was All-LSC honorable mention.
