LAWTON, Okla. (Baseball) – The bullpen needed a break and that's exactly what starters
Matt Terrones (3-0) and
Hayden James (3-2) gave the Javelinas as both threw sensational shutouts in Sunday's doubleheader sweep over Cameron University (7-11, 1-6 LSC) at McCord Field. Texas A&M University-Kingsville (11-7, 5-2 LSC) took game one, 8-0, and a run was all Kingsville needed in game two as the Hogs took the second contest, 1-0. Terrones and James combined to allow just four hits in the dominating performance.
Game OneA big sixth inning blew the game open and allowed the Javelinas to score four runs with two outs and Terrones followed up last week's win over nationally-ranked West Texas A&M University with a shutout as Texas A&M-Kingsville took game one, 8-0. The southpaw struck out four and allowed just three hits in TAMUK's first shutout since April 26, 2014 versus Angelo State (W, 8-0).
The patient Javelinas strung together three walks in the third (
Brayton Carlson,
Hayden Vesely and RBI base on ball by
Cline Andrews) to score first and take a 1-0 lead. Sandwiched between walks was a bunt single by
Ryan Fickel.
Fickel reached on an error to begin the fifth and after stealing second to move into scoring position, the second baseman scored on
Zach Smith's single. On the following play, Vesely found a gap and tripled in Smith as the Hogs scored two in the inning.
A two out rally allowed the Javelinas to tack on four runs in the sixth on consecutive hits by Carlson, Fickel, Smith and Vesely, respectively, to head into the bottom of the frame with a 7-0 lead. In the half-inning, Fickel, Vesely,
Clint Wallace and
Blake Johnson each picked up an RBI.
Miles Holcomb walked to begin the seventh and came around to score on
Mario Siller's RBI double for an 8-0 edge.
The top of the order (Fickel, Smith and Vesely) went a combined 6-for-13 with two hits apiece, five runs and four RBI. Carlson scored two runs and reached base safely twice with a double and walk from the nine-hole.
Dirk Masters (2-3) struck out nine in 5.0 innings but was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs – two earned.
Game TwoJohnson reached on an error and
Larren Artis followed with a single to begin the second. After Holcomb's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners 90 feet, Carlson's single through the left side gave the Hogs a 1-0 lead.
That was all James needed as the right-hander followed an 11-strikeout performance with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. The Aggies were only able to get one hit off the senior as James earned his first shutout in a Javelina uniform.
Javarias Banks threw a complete game for CU in game two but fell to 0-2 on the year after striking out seven and giving up one unearned run.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. Following game four against the Aggies, the Javelinas return to Kingsville for a contest versus St. Mary's University on Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field.
