Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team used a pair of 4-run innings to down fifth-ranked St. Mary's 9-4 snapping the Rattlers' 18-game winning streak in the opening game of Tuesday night's doubleheader. In game two, Kingsville fell 1-0 with the lone run coming in the seventh.
The Javelinas move to 9-31 on the season, while St. Mary's is 37-5 on the season.
Down 2-1 after one inning, Kingsville broke open the game with four runs in both the second and third innings en route to the 9-4 win. The Hoggies outhit St. Mary's 12-5 in the contest. The loss was St. Mary's first since February.
Kingsville sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning as the Javelinas took a 5-2 lead.
Carynn Gonzales was hit by a pitch to start the inning and came around to score on a single by
Cortnee White with two outs.
Bailey Offill followed with a 2-run double driving in
Erica Graham and White. Offill scored the inning's final run on an
Adela Gomez single.
In the third inning, the Javelinas extended their advantage to 9-2 despite starting the frame with two straight outs. Back-to-back singles by
Erica Graham and White got the Javelinas started in the stanza. Offill, who finished with a game-high three hits, then reached on an error to load the bases.
Jaeleen Castro, who scored Kingsville's opening run of the game in the first, then cleared the bases with a triple. Castro made it 9-2 scoring on a
Valerie Ramirez single.
The hosts added a pair of runs in the sixth.
Senior
Lauren Denney (1-2) earned her first win tossing 4-2/3 innings in relief of
Carlie Clark, who walked five in one inning of work and left after one batter in the second. Denney allowed two runs on four hits and five walks.
Ariel Kellogg closed out the game with a scoreless 1-1/3 innings of work.
Marciela Bissaro (7-1) was the losing pitcher for the Rattlers. The loss was her first of the season after winning her first seven starts.
In the second game, the Javelinas suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 defeat with the winning run coming in the bottom of the seventh.
Kat Tapley just missed tossing the fifth no-hitter in Kingsville softball history. Tapley held the Rattlers hitless and scoreless until the seventh. She walked nine batters and sent three down on strikes.
In the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Vidrine led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second. She moved to third on a hit up the middle by Hayley Richter. Bissaro delivered payback with a hit to left field to drive in Vidrine for the win.
Emily Brittain held the Javelinas at bay for the win improving to 19-3 on the season. Brittain limited Kingsville to four hits in the game with Offill recording two.
The Javelinas return home to host top-ranked West Texas A&M on Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. They will play a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities preceding the game.
