Javelina Baseball Heads To Angelo State For LSC Series

KINGSVILLE, Texas – For the third time in four Lone Star Conference series, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team will be road warriors as the team heads to Angelo State for a 4-game series in San Angelo.

The series is slated to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Kingsville enters the weekend with a 7-3 mark in its last 10 games to move to 13-10 on the season overall and 7-5 in the LSC. In the last two games, the Javelinas have swept Cameron, downed then No. 3 St. Mary's, split a 4-game LSC series at Eastern New Mexico and fell to St. Edward's on Tuesday in a rematch of last season's NCAA South Central Championship.
Angelo State is 16-9 on the season and a game behind the Javelinas in the LSC at 6-6.

The two sides met seven times a season ago with Kingsville winning 3-of-4 regular-season meetings in San Angelo. The Hoggies and Rams were the final two teams remaining in the LSC Championship at West Texas A&M. After Angelo won the opener on the final day, Kingsville won the second game later for the title. In the regional tournament, the Rams downed the Javelinas 9-1, however, Kingsville advanced to the regional title later in the tournament. Angelo leads the all-time series 2 3-16.

This weekend's series pits two of the LSC's top three pitching staffs against each other.
Angelo State is second with a 2.70 ERA, the while the Javelinas are third at 3.28. The Rams staff is led by Jake Feckley who is 4-1 on the season with a 1.60 ERA. He is one of four ASU pitchers with an era below with at least 27 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, the Javelina staff has a 3.28 ERA. Taylor Taska is 2-1 with a 1.00 ERA, while Denver Diefenbach has a team-best four wins. Diefenbach leads the team with four wins and shares the lead with Taska with two complete games apiece. Dallas Ponder and Matt Rhodes each have three wins.

Offensively, Derrick Walls leads a group of five Javelinas with at least 45 at bats who have averages of over .300. The others are Blake Johnson (.356), Ryan Guedry (.353), Justin Lee (.333) and Taska (.308). Walls leads the team with a .373 average which is sixth in the LSC, is second in the conference with a .480 on-base percentage, tied for third in steals with eight and for fourth with 20 runs scored. He is one of three Javelinas in the top three in the LSC in walks.

David Goggin leads the Rams with a .370 average and is tied for the LSC lead with 19 RBI. He is one of three ASU players with at least eight steals. Tyler Coughenour and Newhow Norkeh, who has 26 runs scored, lead the league with 16 swipes a piece as Angelo has a league-best 55 steals.
