KINGSVILLE, Texas – Following its series sweep of Lone Star Conference rival Cameron over this past weekend, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team has climbed back into the NCBWA South Central Regional rankings.
The Javelinas, 10-7 overall, head to St. Mary's on Tuesday to take on the region's top-ranked team. The Rattlers (17-4) are currently ranked as high as fourth in Division II, while Kingsville is ranked 30
th.
Kingsville fell at home last season 10-2.
The Javelinas enter the weekend with a .282 team average. Four players with at least 45 at bats are hitting at least .339 for the Hoggies.
Justin Lee is hitting .356 followed by
Ryan Guedry at .354.
Derrick Walls is batting .350 and
Taylor Taska .339. Three players –
James Black,
Clint Wallace and Taska – have a team-leading 12 RBI. Walls leads the team with 13 runs and five stolen bases.
Denver Diefenbach and
Dallas Ponder are tied for the team lead with three wins apiece.
Matt Rhodes and Taska each have two wins. As a staff, Kingsville boasts a 3.34 ERA and is holding opponents to a .264 average.
The Rattlers enter with a .288 average at the plate led by Joe Hermsen with a .386 mark. Omar Garcia is second amongst players with 60 at bats with a .328 average. Mario Maldonado leads the team with three home runs.
St. Mary's has been dominant on the mound. The Rattlers have a staff ERA of 2.81 and opponents are hitting just .219. Matt McClain leads the staff with a 5-1 record and 53 strikeouts. Rene Solis is 4-1.
