Lions Nip Javelinas In Conference Opener

Box Score COMMERCE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team trailed by eight points with 2:09 remaining in its Lone Star Conference opener to Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night, but a late rally came up just short in a 68-66 loss at The Field House.

The Javelinas, 5-8 overall and 0-1 in the LSC, pulled to within a point of Commerce, which is 12-2 on the year and 1-1 in the LSC, on two occasions in the final 23 seconds left.

Down four after a pair of Ronald Scott free throws pulled the Hoggies to within four at 65-61 with 30 seconds left, Irvin Hollinger drained a 3-point basket with 23 seconds remaining.

Tyrie Wooten, who finished the game 10-of-10 from the charity stripe, hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left. The foul shots made it 67-64.

After Scott missed a 3-point attempt for Kingsville, Rashad Basey scored on a putback with two seconds left. The second-chance bucket pulled the Javelinas to within 67-66.
Dwight Taylor fouled Kameron Price with a second remaining. Price made 1-of-2 but the Hoggies did not get another shot.

Hollinger led Kingsville with a career-high 17 points as he was 5-of-7 from the floor including 4-of-5 from the foul line. Scott, who shared top honors with Hollinger with five rebounds, added 13 points along with Basey. Basey had five assists, while Scott had three blocks. Defensively, Kingsville held the LSC's second-highest scoring offense 18 points below its season average.

Four Lions scored in double digits led by Devondrick Walker with 16. Wooten added 14 points, while LaDon Carnegie added 11. Christian Macauley had 10 points with four blocks. Kenny Brown added 11 rebounds.

The Javelinas face another stiff test on Saturday when they host Tarleton State at 3 p.m. The Texans are 12-0 on the year entering the weekend and ranked ninth in the nation.
