Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – The final game of the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Classic came down to a battle of South Texas rivals at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court Saturday evening with the Texas A&M-Kingsville unable to cool off a hot-shooting Texas A&M International in a 86-77 loss.
With the loss, the Javelinas fall to 2-4, while A&M International moves to 4-3.
The Dustdevils hit 65.4% from the floor in the game's first 20 minutes and led 42-36 at the intermission.
TAMIU use d a 12-0 run to take a 28-18 lead with nine minutes left in the half. Johnel Grey, who was named the tournament MVP, had eight points in the run including a pair of threes.
Using the long ball, Kingsville would respond with an 11-2 run to make it 30-29 in the first half.
Rashad Basey, who led the Hoggies with 23 points, was 6-of-6 from the foul line during the run.
Adonis Bailey and Basey had back-to-back 3-point baskets in the run to pull within 30-29.
The Javelinas took their first lead since the 12-minute mark of the first half by scoring the first eight points of the second half. Kingsville had treys from
Jordan Jahr and
Irvin Hollinger in the run to lead 44-42. After a Dustdevil free throw, Kingsville would score on back-to-back lay-ups by
Ronald Scott to take a 48-43 lead. The lead was the Javelinas largest of the game.
Kingsville led 54-40 on a
Ta'Quan McDew 3-point basket with just under 14 minutes
TAMIU regained the lead with an 8-5 run spurred by Damal Donaldson's six points. Kevin Jefferson's jumper made it 58-55.
Jahr drained a three tying the game at 58 with 11 minutes left, but the Dustdevils took control with a 13-3 run to lead.
Kingsville could get no closer than seven points the remainder of the game.
Aside from Basey's 23 points, Bailey and Jahr each had 13 points for Kingsville which shot 47.3% from the floor and was 10-of-22 from the line. The Hoggies had just eight turnovers in the game while swiping 10 steals.
While the Javelinas won the turnover battle forcing 18, International was dominant in the paint. The Dustdevils outscored Kingsville 40-28 in the paint and outrebounded the Hoggies 40-19.
Aside from Grey's 23 points, Donaldson had 20 points. Jefferson added 15 and Jordan Clark 10. Vadel Faniel led the visitors with 10 rebounds.
The Hoggies return to the SPEC on Tuesday when they host St. Edward's at 7 p.m.
