Perry Leads Hoggie Women at LSC Meet

COMMERCE, TEXAS – In an exciting Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championship meet hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Texas A&M-Kingsville freshman Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) blazed her way to a conference title in the 400-meter dash.

Angelo State retained the conference title for a fourth straight season by the slimmest of margins, a half point, over Abilene Christian. The championship came down to the 4x400-meter relay in which ACU won and the Belles came in second to secure their team title with 195.5 points.

The Javelinas finished in fifth place with 66.5 points. ACU was second with 195 points, West Texas A&M was third with 134 points and Tarleton State was fourth with 75 points. Rounding out the scoring teams were A&M-Commerce (57 points), Incarnate Word (55), Eastern New Mexico (24) and Midwestern State (15).

Perry became the Javelinas’ first LSC champion since the 2007 season. Her time of 54.64 is good enough to automatically qualify her for the NCAA Division II National Meet May 24-26 at Colorado State-Pueblo. Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) and Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) took fifth and sixth, respectively in the event. Those three teamed with Stephanie Garcia (Freer/Freer HS) to take fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:49.13.

The team started the final day of the meet with a couple of nice performances in the javelin and high jump. Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) took third in the javelin with a toss of 133-5, the second best of her career. Ashley Zamora (San Juan/PSJA HS) added a seventh place showing in the javelin. In the high jump, Alvarez and Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) each cleared 5-3.75. Alvarez took seventh place while Haven tied for third due to misses.

The Javelinas have two more “last chance” meets to try to qualify individuals and relay teams for the national meet.
