COMMERCE, TEXAS – The second day of the 2012 Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships were full of starts and stops as a pair of lightning delays slowed things down and then halted the proceedings at approximately 9:35 p.m. two laps into the women’s 10,000 meters.
Despite the delays, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men and women each had a number of strong performances. In the men’s meet five events, including the decathlon, have concluded and six events have finished in the women’s meet.
The Javelina women had five scorers on the day. Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) posted a personal best in triple jump leaping 38-11 to take third place. They had three scorers in the pole vault with Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Amy Rabalais (Sandia/George West HS) tying for fourth place at 11-0.25 and Amy McCumber (George West/George West HS) took seventh place.
Freshman Chelsea Ikeda (Keller/Keller Central HS) was the first scorer of the day for the Javelinas in the hammer throw. She tossed the implement 149-7. The women’s team is currently in fourth place with 22 points.
The meet concludes on Saturday with the field events starting at 11 a.m. and the track events at 5:30 p.m. The 10,000 meters were still up in the air at press time, but likely will be run at 7:15 a.m.
