SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field teams completed the regular season on Sunday evening at The Last Stand Meet hosted by Trinity University on the campus of Incarnate Word.
The Javelinas took a small contingent of athletes to the meet, but still managed to set a school record and post a number of NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying marks. The highlight of the meet was the women’s 4x400-meter relay team setting a new school record with a time of 3:47.59. The quartet of Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS), Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS), Stephanie Garcia (Freer/Freer HS) and Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) broke the 13-year old school record by a scant one-hundredth of a second.
The women had three strong performances in the field events. Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) won the javelin with a toss of 127-4. Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) provisionally qualified for nationals with a clearance of 5-6.5 en route to finishing in second. Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) was second in the triple jump with a leap of 37-6.75.
The teams will now prepare for the NCAA Division II National Meet hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo May 24-26.
