HOUSTON, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field teams competed at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational hosted by Rice University at Ley Track and Holloway Field on Saturday night.
The Javelina women had four NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and a number of other season bests. Freshman Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) provisionally qualified in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 38-7.75 and finished in third place. In the 400 meters, freshmen Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) and Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) took second and fourth in 56.01 and 56.02, respectively, both marks under the provisional mark. The 4x400-meter relay team of Perry, Trevino, Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Stephanie Garcia (Freer/Freer HS) clocked a provisional time of 3:48.19 to win the event.
The 4x100-meter relay of Santia Deck (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS), Perry, Trevino and Stafford posted a season best result and the fifth best time in school history, 47.33.
A number of other Javelina women had strong performances. Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) cleared a personal record 5-5.25 in the high jump and took the silver medal. Tezna Roy (Palacios/Palacios HS) ran a personal record in the 800 meters in a time of 2:21.73. Marissa Acosta (Alice/Alice HS) continues to improve dramatically in the 3,000-meter steeplechase running a 12:12.91. Briana Villarreal (La Feria/La Feria HS) clocked a personal record of 4:58.45 in the 1500 meters.
The Javelinas are now off until the Lone Star Conference Championships May 4-6 in Commerce, TX.
