Track Competes at Trinity Alumni Classic

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS –The Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field teams were at the Trinity Alumni Classic on Saturday afternoon with a number of promising results.

The Javelina women were led by the outstanding performance of freshman Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS). Running her first 400-meter dash of the season, she clocked a 55.17 en route to the only victory of the day for the team. It was the third best time in school history and provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II championships. She was also fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.99.

Prior to her win in the 400 meters, Trevino teamed with Santia Deck (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS), Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) and Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) in the 400-meter relay. The squad finished in second place in a season-best time of 47.73.

Two other freshmen, Porschea Wilson (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) and Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) each had silver medal performances. Wilson continued her season long improvement in the 100-meter hurdles and clocked a season best 14.79 in the finals. Alvarez took second in the triple jump with a leap of 37-1 and was fourth in the long jump with a season best mark of 17-10.75.

The two best field events for the women’s team were the high jump and pole vault. Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) each cleared 5-4.25 in the high jump and tied for third place. Alvarez was also third in the pole vault with a season best clearance of 10-11.75. Amy Rabalais (Sandia/George West HS) nabbed fourth in the pole vault (10-0.5) and came back with a silver medal in the javelin with a toss of 120-6.

The Javelinas are back in action next Saturday at the Rice University J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational.
