Javs Run Well at Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – Competing just three days after their last meet, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s and women’s track & field teams each had a number of strong performances at the Tarleton State Invitational on Tuesday night.

The Javelina women had two individual winners and a number of other top three finishes in the second outdoor meet of the season. Freshmen Chelsea Ikeda (Keller/Keller Central HS) and Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) won the hammer throw and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Ikeda eclipsed 140 feet for the second time this year with a winning toss of 141-4. Trevino posted a time of 1:04.99 in the 400 hurdles to outpace the competition.

The 400-meter relay team of Santia Deck (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS), Trevino, Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) and Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) took second place in a time of 48.66. Alvarez took second place in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 37-3.25 that unfortunately was wind-aided. Stafford tied for second in the 200 meters in 25.18 despite running into a strong headwind and nabbed fourth in the 400 meters in 59.39.

Freshman Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) had another strong meet tying for second in the 200-meter dash and grabbing third place in the 400-meter dash. She ran the exact same time as Stafford in the 200 crossing the tape in 25.18 and finished in 59.32 in the 400 meters.

The teams are back in action on March 17 at home in the IBC Bank Cactus Cup.
