Second Day at LSU Relays

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – Junior Sergio Rios (Brownsville/James Pace HS) led the Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field contingent on Saturday at the LSU Relays. He won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 52.01 and he also ran a leg on the third place 4x400-meter relay team.

Rios automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II National Meet on Friday when he clocked a 51.56 in the 400 hurdles and followed it up with another strong performance in the finals. He teamed with Anthony Washington (Cypress/Cy-Springs HS), Tyler Garibay (Brownsville/United HS) and Jonathan Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) on the 4x400-meter relay team. They posted a time of 3:11.67, the second best time in Division II this year and a provisional qualifying mark.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Washington, Tim Price (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS), Marquis Cardinal (Spring/Klein Collins HS) and Woodson also finished third in a time of 40.60. Price tied his season best in the open 100 meters with a time of 10.53 which is the third best time in the country this year.

Andre Fuqua (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) added a second place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase crossing the finish line in 10:08.68.

Andrew Wells (Unionville, Ont./Unionville HS) led the field athletes. He took fourth place in the discus and provisionally qualified for nationals with a throw of 164-10. Geronimo Lopez (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 52-8.75. C.J. Griggs (Cedar Lane/Van Vleck HS) performed well in the triple jump with a leap of 48-10, just off his season best. In the pole vault, Dylan Riedesel (Victoria/Memorial HS) eclipsed 15 feet for the first time during the outdoor season with a clearance of 15-1.5.

The Javelina women did not have many participants on Saturday, but still managed to have a number of strong performances. The 4x100-meter relay team of Logan Nelson (Orange Grove/Orange Grove HS), Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS), Stephanie Garcia (Freer/Freer HS) and Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) posted a season best time of 3:56.67. Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) cleared 10-10.75 in the pole vault, a season best.

The Javelinas are back in action March 28-31 at the Texas Relays and on Friday at the Trinity Tigers Relays in San Antonio.
