Alvarez Reaches Mark in Javelin

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field teams headed out of state for the first time this season on Friday and were rewarded with perfect weather and banner performances on the first day of the LSU Relays at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

The Javelina women were led by a strong trio of high jumpers. Senior Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) and junior Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) each cleared 5-5 to finish second and third, respectively. Freshman Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) grabbed sixth place by clearing 5-3.

Earlier in the day, Alvarez had an even better performance in the javelin. While she did not place as high, she broke her own school record and eclipsed the NCAA Division II provisional mark with a toss of 136-8. It was the seventh best throw in the country this year.

The women had some solid performances in the hurdle events. Freshman Porschea Wilson (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) continued her progress in the 100-meter hurdles with a season best time of 15.16. In the 400-meter hurdles, Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) crossed the tape in 1:06.55 while Logan Nelson (Orange Grove/Orange Grove HS) clocked a 1:07.34, her best time of the year.

Championship Saturday at the LSU Relays will heat up at 1 p.m. CDT following the opening ceremony at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium. The second day of competition also features a morning session that will kick off at 9 a.m. with the field events, followed by the first events on the track at 9:30 a.m.
