Alvarez Sets School Record

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field teams opened the outdoor season at the third annual Incarnate Word Invitational on Friday.

The Javelina women swept the javelin and grabbed another first place in the hammer.

Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) won the javelin with a school-record throw of 131-1. She just missed provisional qualifying in the event. Amy Rabalais (Sandia/George West HS) took second and Ashley Zamora (San Juan/PSJA HS) was third with throws of 120-11 and 117-10, respectively.

In the hammer throw, a pair of freshmen each posted marks that are in the top 10 all-time in school history. Chelsea Ikeda (Keller/Central HS) won the event with a throw of 142-11, the third best throw in school history while Kamry Horton (Cuero/Cuero HS) tossed the implement 120-0, the ninth best mark.

The meet concludes on Saturday.
