Women Take Third at IBC Bank Cactus Cup

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s track & field team literally ran away with the 2012 IBC Bank Cactus Cup title on Saturday at Javelina Stadium while the women’s team finished a strong third place.

In the women’s team results it was A&M-Corpus Christi taking the team title with 204 points. They were followed by Angelo State (161), A&M-Kingsville (121), UT-Pan American (85), Tarleton State (83) and Incarnate Word (68).

The Javelinas were led by freshman Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) in her first career home meet. She won the 400-meter dash in a time of 57.80 and she took second in the 200 meters in a time of 25.25. Finally, she ran the first leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay team that clocked a season best time of 3:56.86, the fastest 1600-meter relay by the team since 2005.

Joining Perry on the relay team were Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS), Tezna Roy (Palacios/Palacios HS) and Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS). Stafford was also third in the 400 meters in a time of 59.10.

The Javelinas opened the meet with three scorers in the high jump. Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS), Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) each cleared 5-4.25 to finish third, fifth and fifth, respectively. Alvarez also took third in the javelin and fifth in the pole vault.

Freshman Kamry Horton (Cuero/Cuero HS) had a strong showing. She took second in the discus with a toss of 132-0 and was fourth in the hammer with a throw of 132-4. Fellow freshman Chelsea Ikeda (Keller/Keller Central HS) was second in the hammer with a throw of 137-3.

Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) continued her steady improvement in the long and triple jumps. She was fifth in the long jump with a season best of 17-10.75 and was third in the triple jump with a personal best of 37-5.25.

The Javelinas are back in action next weekend at the LSU Relays on Friday and Saturday.
