
LUBBOCK, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s and women’s track & field programs each had a strong second day at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Invitational on Monday at Texas Tech’s Athletic Training Center.
The meet is a prelude to next year when the LSC will officially offer an indoor track and field championship. The team results for this year are all unofficial.
The Javelina women were led by junior Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS). The 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor National High Jump Runner-Up won the event with a personal best indoor clearance of 5-7 that also is a national provisional mark. Prior to her first place finish in the high jump, she cleared 10-10 in the pole vault and tied for third place with teammate Amy Rabalais (Sandia/George West HS).
The 400-meter runners for the women had a strong performance. Freshman Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) took second place with a provisional mark of 56.77. Teammates Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS) came in fifth and sixth in 57.90 and 59.98, respectively. Stafford and Perry nabbed fifth and sixth place in the 200 meters. Joining the trio on the 4x400-meter relay was Bethani Eberhart (Lindsay/Lindsay HS) and they were able to run a season-best time of 3:57.63 to take fourth place.
Six other athletes finished in the scoring for the team. Tezna Roy (Palacios/Palacios HS) was fifth in the 800 meters, Santia Deck (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS) was fifth in the 55 meters, Aricela Alvarez (Bishop/Bishop HS) took fourth in the triple jump, Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) was fourth in the high jump and Taylor McCumber (George West/George West HS) was fifth in the pole vault.
In the women’s meet, the unofficial team results showed West Texas A&M coming out on top with 140 points. They were followed by Angelo State (114), Abilene Christian (112), Incarnate Word (97) and the Javelinas (62).
