Track Opens Season at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville indoor track & field season opened on Friday night at the Texas Tech Invitational on a flat, over-sized track.

The Javelina women were led by junior Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) and freshman Kathy Trevino (Rio Grande City/Rio Grande City HS). Alvarez, the 2011 NCAA Division II outdoor national runner-up, tied for third place with a clearance of 5-5. Trevino took sixth place in the 600 yards with a time of 1:28.00.

In the 200-meter dash, the team had three athletes perform well in the opening meet of the season. Freshman Amber Perry (Goliad/Goliad HS) led the way in a time of 25.68 and was followed by junior Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) in 26.17 and sophomore Santia Deck (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS) in 26.28.

The second half of the meet will conclude on Saturday.
