The Javelinas (4-6, 2-6) fell behind in the early going of each set as the Pioneers (3-7, 3-3) jumped out to quick starts thanks in large part to the play of Viktorija Jablonska. She had TWU’s first or second kill of each set and finished the match with 18 kills and a .371 attack. She also contributed eight digs, four assists and three blocks.
Side out percentage proved to be the deciding factor in the match. In the first and fourth sets, the Javelinas had a higher percentage while the Pioneers held the advantage in the other three sets.
The Javelinas finished the match with 50 kills, 71 digs and 14.0 total blocks. Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) led the team with 10 kills while Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) and Lakeshia Craft (Pflugerville/Connally HS) combined for 17 kills and a .260 attack percentage. Johns, Craft and Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) were the main blockers for the team with six, five and six, respectively. Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) had 25 digs while Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) added 14 digs. Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) dished out a team high 25 assists.
The Pioneers had 61 kills, 95 digs and 10.0 team blocks. In addition to Jablonska, Chloe’ Tate had 16 kills and three blocks while Erin Harman had 12 kills, 12 digs and five blocks. Janie Forman led the team with seven blocks while Morgan Wilson led a balanced defensive effort with 19 digs. Hannah Marshall posted a double-double with 35 assists and 16 digs.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Texas A&M-Commerce at home.
