
LAREDO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team came back from a two sets to one deficit to knock off Texas A&M-International on the road Tuesday night 18-25, 25-17, 18-25, 26-24, 15-10. (

After the Dustdevils (11-14) took the first and third sets easily, the match took a turn in the fourth set. The Javelinas (12-10) jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the set thanks to Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) serving up seven straight points. The Devils came back by scoring five straight points to make it 17-16 Hoggies and then took a 23-22 lead before Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) put her stamp on the match. The Javs scored their final three points of the set on blocks by Macek who teamed with Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) on one and Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) on the final two.
Macek’s three blocks propelled the Javelinas into the fifth set where they did not commit a single attack error and won 15-10.
The Javelinas finished with nine fewer kills than the Dustdevils, but were able to take advantage of 10 TAMIU service errors. Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) led the team with a double-double of 22 assists and 12 digs. Washington had 12 kills and four blocks while Lakeshia Craft (Pflugerville/Connally HS) added 12 kills and five blocks. Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) added 10 kills, six digs and four blocks while fellow freshman Giselle Carreon (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) had 22 assists. Macek led the team with six blocks and Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) led all players with 29 digs.
The Dustdevils pounded out 63 kills and had a .201 attack percentage compared to the Hogs’ .162 attack. Andrea Marshall led all players with 18 kills and added 10 digs. Alex Ciszek and Dari Winckler both had double-doubles. Ciszek had 14 kills and 16 digs while Winckler had 50 assists and 16 digs. Desiree Ortiz dug 23 digs to lead the team.
The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lone Star Conference rival Cameron University.
