
AUSTIN, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the St. Edward’s Tournament on Friday. The lost to Missouri Southern in five sets 25-18, 18-25, 13-25, 25-15, 15-13 and then fell to Dallas Baptist 25-14, 25-14, 25-14. (

In the first match of the day, the Javelinas (1-5) played possibly their best match of the season against the Lions (5-0). Freshman Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) led the offensive attack with 15 kills and a .378 attack. She added 12 digs to pick up her first career double-double. Jess Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) added 13 kills and was an important part of the team’s .215 attack. Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) led the team with 21 digs while Cristina Romo (Bandera/Medina Valley HS), Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) and Whitney Roth (Gering, NE/Gering HS) each had four blocks. Amanda Yeager (Brenham/Brenham HS) dished out 21 assists while Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) added 19 of her own.
The Lions were led by Britta Vavao-Huggins and Renee Rheinecker who each had 13 kills. Elin Skei directed the offense with 42 assists, 10 digs and six kills. Ashlee Russell led the defense with 19 digs.
The Hoggies struggled in their afternoon match against the Lady Patriots (4-1). DBU pounded out a .384 attack percentage while committing just eight attack errors. Becky Swann and Kaylyn Frink did most of the damage as they combined for 26 kills and a .500 attack.
The Javelinas posted a .030 attack percentage with no one getting more than six kills. Hernandez led the team with 16 digs while Lozano added three service aces. Yeager dished out 16 assists to lead the team.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 10 o’clock against Northwest Missouri State.
