SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Showing tremendous improvement from a year ago the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s track and field team grabbed fourth place at the Lone Star Conference Championships hosted by Angelo State on Sunday. (Results)
After a strong showing on Saturday, the Javelinas continued to roll up the points on Sunday. Three Hoggies placed in the javelin with Amy Rabalais (Sandia/George West HS) taking fourth with a toss of 121-3, Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) sixth with a throw of 115-8 and Katie Dugie (Yorktown/Yorktown HS) seventh with a heave of 115-3.
In the 5000 meters, sophomore Jessica Martinez (Zapata/Zapata HS) finished third in a personal best time of 18:57.69. Senior Erica Alvarado (Falfurrias/Falfurrias HS) followed closely behind in fifth place in a time of 19:08.11.
Senior Rhonida Carter (Houston/Nimitz HS) had a strong day in both hurdle events. She provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.33 to take fifth. She came back in the 400 hurdles to grab seventh place in a time of 1:05.72.
Freshman Samone Lindsey (Indianapolis, IN/Elkins HS) set a personal record in the long jump leaping 18-10 to provisionally qualify for nationals.
The 1600-meter relay team of Tuveesha Jones (Killeen/Ellison HS), Carter, Diana Zarate (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/San Patricio HS) and Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) clocked a season best 3:57.49.
Samantha Alvarez earned all-Lone Star Conference honors after tallying a total of 15 points in the meet.
The final team standings were Angelo State (297), Abilene Christian (204), West Texas A&M (88), Texas A&M-Kingsville (77), Tarleton State (73), Eastern New Mexico (35), Central Oklahoma (19) and Texas A&M-Commerce (13).
