Javelinas Dominate Border Olympics

  LAREDO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field team started the outdoor season with a bang. The women’s team won eight of 14 events while the men’s team won 13 of 16 events on Saturday.

The Javelina women were led by senior Rhonida Carter (Houston/Nimitz HS) won two individual events and ran the third leg on the winning 1600-meter relay team. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.02 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.29. She teamed with Ninfa Rios (Runge/Runge HS), Diana Zarate (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/San Patricio HS) and Tuveesha Jones (Killeen/Ellison HS).

Other winners for the Javelinas were Samone Lindsey (Indianapolis, IN/Elkins HS), Amy Rabalais (Sandia/George West HS), Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS), Christal Gonzales (Beeville/Coastal Bend College) and Katie Dugie (Yorktown/Yorktown HS). Lindsey won the long jump (16-5), Rabalais the pole vault (10-5), Alvarez the high jump (5-3), Gonzales the discus (106-2) and Dugie the shot put (39-0).

The Javelina men were led by Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) who had two individual wins and ran the second leg on the winning 1600-meter relay team. Davis won the long jump with a leap of 23-5, just missing NCAA Division II provisional qualifying. He also won the 200 meters in a time of 22.19. He teamed with Norman Thompson (Garnerville, NY/Nassau CC), Isaiah Glover (Cuero/Cuero HS) and Sergio Rios (Brownsville/James Pace HS) to clock a 3:21.17.

The Javelinas had two double winners. Ted Dugie (Yorktown/Yorktown HS) won the pole vault with a clearance of 14-0 and the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.95. Jorge Guerra (Roma/Roma HS) won both the discus and shot put. He tossed the discus 133-0 and the shot put 49-3.

Glover and Rios, in addition to their win in the 1600-meter relay, each won an individual event. Glover won the triple jump with a leap of 45-6. Rios won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.53.

Other winners for the Hoggies included Anthony Washington (Cypress/Cy-Springs HS), Brian Boyd (League City/Clear Creek HS), Josh Prado (Robstown/Orange Grove HS), Michael Price (Corpus Christi/Howard Payne), Jonathon Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) and Charles Wells (Roanoke/Southwestern University).

Washington won the 100 meters in 10.98, Boyd won the 400 meters in 50.89 and Prado won the 1:57.64. Washington, Price, Woodson and Wells won the 400-meter relay in 42.17.
