
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s track team narrowly missed winning the 2010 IBC Bank Cactus Cup on Saturday at Javelina Stadium. (

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the meet with 168 points, the Javelinas were second with 161, while UT-Pan American took third with 159 and Incarnate Word was fourth with 90.
The Javelinas performed well in the field events as they won five of the eight disciplines. Freshman Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) took first prize in both the high jump (5-3) and pole vault (10-0). Junior Katie Dugie (Yorktown/Yorktown HS) also won two events while picking up an extra fourth place. She won the shot put (39-10.75) and javelin (112-10) and was fourth in the hammer throw (91-1). Junior Christal Gonzales (Beeville/Jones HS) won the discus with a toss of 106-9 and place third in the hammer throw (113-7).
On the track the Javelinas did not fare quite as well. Senior Rhonida Carter (Houston/Nimitz HS) picked up the team’s only win in the 400-meter hurdles as she cruised to victory in 1:05.91. She grabbed silver medalist honors in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.78 that was slowed by major head winds all day long. She anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that took second place in a time of 4:07.95. Joining her on the team were Tuveesha Jones (Killeen/Ellison HS), Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) and Diana Zarate (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/San Patricio HS).
Senior Erica Alvarado (Falfurrias/Falfurrias HS) took second place in the 1500 meters as she finished in 4:57.15.
