Alvarez, Carter Lead Hoggie Women

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – A freshman and a senior led the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s track team on Thursday night at Tarleton State. Freshman Samantha Alvarez (Victoria/Memorial HS) had two second place finishes while senior Rhonida Carter (Houston/Nimitz HS) picked up the team’s only victory in the 400-meter hurdles.

Alvarez cleared 5-6 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. She is the first Javelina to qualify this year. She bounced back in the pole vault to clear 10-7.25 to grab her second silver medal of the meet.

Carter smashed her personal record in the 400 hurdles winning the event in a time of 1:03.83, nearly three seconds faster than her previous best. She finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.08. She anchored the fifth place 4x400-meter relay team that included Tuveesha Jones (Killeen/Ellison HS), Ninfa Rios (Runge/Runge HS) and Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS). They finished in a time of 4:05.59.

Other top performances were turned in by Stafford, Erica Alvarado (Falfurrias/Falfurrias HS) and Samone Lindsey (Indianapolis, IN/Elkins HS). Stafford took third in the 200 meters in a time of 25.72. Alvarado nabbed third place in the 5,000 meters by running a personal record time of 18:16.35. Lindsey leaped 18-1.25 in the long jump. That earned her second place and was just short of the NCAA Divison II provisional qualifying standard.

The Javelinas are back in action on March 20 at the IBC Bank Cactus Cup at Javelina Stadium.
