Alvarado Has Her Day

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville track team traveled to the University of Houston All-Comer’s Meet on Saturday and had three student-athletes provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Javelina men were led by the trio of Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS), Isaiah Glover (Cuero/Cuero HS) and C.J. Griggs (Cedar Lane/Van Vleck HS) who all provisionally qualified for nationals.  Davis leaped 23-5.25 in the long jump, an increase of a half inch over his efforts last week.  Griggs and Glover bounded 48-8.75 and 48-6, respectively in the triple jump.  Griggs and Glover both have the indoor school record of 49-0 in their sights.

The Javelinas had six runners compete in the sprint events.  Anthony Washington (Cypress/Cy-Springs HS) led the team in both the 60-meters (7.05) and 200-meters (22.72).

Sergio Rios (Brownsville/James Pace HS) broke 51 seconds for the first time this season in the 400-meters with a time of 50.97.

Ted Dugie (Yorktown/Yorktown HS) cleared 14-7.25 in the pole vault.

The Javelina women brought a smaller contingent of student-athletes, but still had a number of strong performances.

Erica Alvarado (Falfurrias/Falfurrias HS) ran both the 800-meters and mile.  She clocked a 2:22.97 in the 800 and a 5:22.88 in the mile.  She is less than seven seconds away from both school records.

Rhonida Carter (Houston/Nimitz HS) had another strong meet.  She clocked a 9.41 in the 60-meter hurdles and came back with a 1:00.74 in the open 400-meters.

Brittany Stafford (Victoria/Memorial HS) continues to be the team’s top sprinter.  She finished the 60-meter dash in 8.11 and the 200-meters in 26.87.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday, February 12 at the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games in New York City.
