WEATHERFORD, OKLAHOMA – The fifth ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville finally put together the type of game they have been waiting for all season long in their 56-17 rout at Lone Star Conference rival Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Milam Field. (box score)

It was the Jonathon Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) Show in the first half as he gained 187 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns. He carried the ball 16 times for 117 yards and three scores, had two catches for 19 yards and a touchdown and returned one kick 51 yards. His most impressive run was a 52-yard burst in the second quarter, a career long mark.

The Javelina (8-1, 7-1) defense was just as good as Woodson in the first half limiting the Bulldogs (2-7, 2-6) to minus-4 yards rushing, 46 yards passing and only two first downs. The defense was so dominant that they forced six first half punts and two turnovers.

In the first half, the Javelinas scored early and often as the offense racked up 364 yards. Woodson got the scoring started with a 3-yard run with 11:47 left in the first half. Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) converted the first of eight extra-point tries to make it 7-0.

After the teams traded punts, the Javelinas gained possession at their own 9-yard line. An 11-yard pass from Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) to Christian Taylor (Houston/Westfield HS) got the team out of their own endzone. Three plays later, Poppell hit Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) on a post pattern and he went 73 yards for his longest touchdown of the season with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hoggies would score once more before the end of the quarter after a Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) interception set the team up with great field position at the Southwestern 35-yard line. Five consecutive runs led to a 16-yard scoring scamper by Woodson with 37 ticks left in the period.

The Hog defense forced another quick three-and-out giving the team possession at the SWOSU 29. Four plays later, Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) walked into the endzone on a 1-yard score with 13:52 left in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs got on the board when Preston Margain intercepted a Poppell pass and returned it 23 yards to the Javelina 7. The Hog defense prevented the touchdown, but Colton Rainey drilled a 22-yard field goal to make it 28-3 with 10:31 left in the first half.

Later in the second quarter, Woodson took a handoff from Poppell and went 52 yards for his third score of the game with 5:17 remaining in the half.

Woodson added another touchdown 21 seconds before the half ended when he capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 6-yard reception from Poppell. Poppell went 7-for-8 on the drive for 66 yards and also had a rush for eight yards.

In the second half, the Javelinas put the starters on both offense and defense on the bench and gave the second unit a long look. The Hoggies kept mainly to the ground attempting only four second half passes.

Junior quarterback Daniel Ramirez (Sinton/Sinton HS) showed some wheels as he scored twice on runs of 52 and nine yards. He finished the game with 81 yards on six carries while completing 3-of-4 passes for 38 yards.

Eleven different players carried the ball for the Javelinas. Woodson and Ramirez led the way, but Myron Brew (San Antonio/Jay HS) and Arron Fisher (Orlando, FL/West Orange HS) showed up well. Brew had 40 yards on seven carries while Fisher finished with 31 yards on five jet sweeps or reverses. In all, the Javelinas piled up a season high 325 yards rushing on 55 carries.

In the passing game, Poppell was 12-for-17 for 183 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the first half. Lincoln finished with four catches for 108 yards and a score, the second time this year he has gone over 100 yards. Overall, the offense finished with 546 yards of total offense. The only negative for the team was their four turnovers.

On defense, the Javelinas limited the Bulldogs to just 31 yards rushing and 176 yards passing. Robertson, Derrick Thomas (San Antonio/Jay HS) and Roman Pula (Tacoma, WA/Lincoln HS) each had an interception. Pula also had one of the team’s three sacks. Dustin Appling (El Campo/El Campo HS) and Robert McCormick (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) each finished with six tackles.

The Javelina punting game was also strong as Matt Stoll (College Station/A&M Consolidated HS) had one punt for 51 yards and Angel Millan (Brownsville) added two punts averaging 52.5 yards.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of second half touchdowns, one by Dustin Stenta on a 1-yard run and the other by Jordan Davis on a 2-yard pass from Stenta. Stenta finished 22-for-48 for 176 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Bruce Hatton was the top receiver on the team with eight catches for 61 yards while Dwight Pete led the ground game with 24 yards on eight carries.

On defense, Jonathan Darby was called upon to make 18 tackles while Clarence Laster added 12 tackles and a 53-yard interception return out of his own endzone.

The Javelinas are back in action next Saturday at 7 p.m. against Midwestern State in Javelina Stadium.
